Summary/Abstract: Confl icts among and within nations have affected people’s lives for centuries. As John Keegan claims, war – an extreme form of international confl ict – is as old as mankind. However, many aspects of this social and political phenomenon still remain a secret. Needless to say, there is no one, universally accepted theory or even a defi nition of international confl ict. Moreover, experts disagree over such fundamental questions as the sources of confl ict or its consequences. This paper presents a structural concept of international confl ict which says that every confl ict consists of at least three elements: a confl ict situation, confl ict behaviour and confl ict attitudes. Furthermore the paper refers to the process of confl ict – its beginning, development and termination. The author refers to the works of the scientists Johan Galtung, Kalevi J. Holsti and Christopher R. Mitchell.
