Summary/Abstract: {Zwierciadlana zagadka} (Mirror’s riddle) is the only science-fiction novel by Jadwiga Łuszczewska who is known primarily as an author of historical novels and improvisator. The present story uses the legend of the basilisk and the efforts to bring it back to life. Analysing {Zwierciadlana zagadka} through the prism of the urban legend, a phenomenon described in the literature and folklore research in the second half of the twentieth century, allows to read it as a record of the late nineteenth century fear of modern discoveries related to the sphere of human memory - capturing images in photography and on video tape.
