Summary/Abstract: The development of urban and rural settlements in Banat was deeply influenced through extensive restructuring in the eighteenth century. Some peculiarities were applied during this process, both in the urban and architectural treatment. The specific configuration of the predetermined plan is well known, being based on a rectangular street network, which amended the organic structures of the villages in the zones of the Banat plain. The same model is found in urban settlements, which have received a new organization within the built areas. Other elements common to both urban and rural development can also be found, as well as differences, which provide the urban quality of some settlements. Jimbolia is one of the cities in Banat, which provides a good framework for analyzing the mix of rural-urban influences. The paper proposes an approach to this town in the specific context of the settlements in northwestern Banat plain by stressing the interference between urban and rural visible in its urban plan and in the configuration of its various types of houses.
