Summary/Abstract: Hervé Guibert’s self-portraits bear the traces of Chris Marker’s filmic imaginary, echoing his science-fiction film, La Jetée, produced in 1962. While Chris Marker’s protagonist – a man who has no name and no history – travels across anti-utopian, dystopian and utopian universes, seen as reversible episodes of his evolution, Hervé Guibert creates an alternative account of this indefinite universe in his images of the 1980s, by insisting on the fictitious aspects of photography and on its failure to represent anything other than death.
