Summary/Abstract: Considered one of the most important representatives of feminism in the field of contemporary literature, the Canadian writer Margaret Atwood stands for something more, as far as her novels (from The Edible Woman, 1969 to Cat’s Eye, 1988 or the The Penelopiad, 2005) embody her preoccupation and interest in discussing the circumstances her women-characters have to endure or try to change. Atwood changes the well-known structure of the traditional Bildungsroman and transforms the apparently simple stories of her heroines into histories of the very difficult on the road of self-discovery and affirmation. This is the case of Marian and also that of Elaine, the situation of Penelope herself being more or less similar, if we ignore the mythological scenario built by an author who knows perfectly how to manage all the specific strategies of postmodern literature, from parody to the very specific irony or even sarcasm.
