Summary/Abstract: This essay, entitled Fernando Pessoa between Existence and Literature, has as its main purpose to discuss the way this Portuguese writer tried to express the inner fight he always had to face, torn as he was between personal existence and the expression of literature. Pessoa, one of the most important representatives of modern literature lived his love-story for Ophelia Queiroz as a textual experience, expressed it with the fervor of great Romantic poets, nevertheless letting unexplained most of his decisions and reactions. He wrote and read as if he simply lived and therefore all his personal attitudes may be seen as fragments of his literary work. Fernando is in love with all love literature written before him and consequently Pessoa (the poet and the essayist) has always difficulties when the most real life or his beloved Ophelia ask for his immediate response.
