Summary/Abstract: The haunted house motif was first found in English gothic literature, and was developed in American and Croatian literature into original motif preceded by and influenced by different historical and social changes. Although the structure and literary period are different these two short stories have the same motifs and theme. Faulkner’s modern story has all the characteristics of gothic literature, and Gjalski tells his story in the realistic manner and provides the theme of aristocratic family decline with the romantic and dramatic elements.
