Summary/Abstract: The rich liturgical heritage of the Balkan Slavs has been preserved in a number of important sources, most of which reflect earlier liturgical practices, all the while exhibiting features that anticipate later developments. Such is the case with ms no. 113 of the National Library in Sofia, a service menaion for August. Liturgical and musical instructions for the Dormition of the Theotokos as transmitted by NBKM 113 provide a basis for establishing those critical contact points between the Balkans and Rus’ at this historical juncture. This source bears witness to the high-water mark of medieval Balkan liturgical culture
