Summary/Abstract: The development of preferential trade agreements (PTAs) is a characteristic trend in the global economy after World War II. However, not all countries are involved in this process to the same extent. One of the examples of a country with a cautious policy towards PTAs is Japan, which only from the turn of the twentieth and twenty-first century began to show an interest in the creation of the preferential areas of economic cooperation. The author of the study indicates reasons, presents the evolution and assesses effects of changes in Japanese foreign trade policy towards preferential trade agreements. The study was carried out using the method of literature studies and casual analysis. Research confirms the thesis that the change in policy towards preferential trade agreements in Japan was dictated by the desire to reduce losses due to non-participation in the agreements and by the desire to gain economic benefits arising from the active formulation and implementation of such agreements.
