Summary/Abstract: The present article attempts at defining the economic activities of public benefit organisations (PBOs) against the current Polish legal regulations, including notably the changes introduced by the latest amendment to the law on public benefit activities and volunteer work. The author considers the issue to be interesting as the charity stream is being taken over by a group of large PBOs possessing distinct media images, which financial situation is very good. The article defines economic activities by non-profit organisations in relation to their paid and unpaid statutory activities, as well as the current regulations and practice so far. The main aim of the article is to demonstrate that economic activities by PBOs can give them more independence from the public administration, public funds and charity in its broad sense – especially at their initial stages of activity.
