Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to examine institutional change of post-communist countries applying the limited and open access orders theory proposed by D.C. North, J.J. Wallis, and B.R. Weingast. First, the conceptual framework of North, Weingast, and Wallis is presented. Then the theory is applied to analyze the process of transitions of the post-communist Europe. Finally the conclusions are presented. The paper shows that cultural factors had a crucial impact on the outcome of market reforms. Furthermore the countries that had opportunity to join the European Union performed better in their transformation to democracy and market economy.
