Summary/Abstract: This article treats two aspects of the relationship between literature and language. From the point of view of the history of the problem as it has been formulated and treated in Umjetnost Riječi (Word Art) according to the dimension work-reader one can discern three phases which create a dialectical trend: 1. belief in the ontological objectivity of the work and its language in relation to the receiver (Z. Škreb), 2. gnostic-psychological relativity of the work in favour of the receiver and demonstration of the impossibility of me dia ting, through language-constructs a specific linguistic art-creation (R. Katičić) and 3. indicating the paradoxical-dynamic structure of relationship between work and receiver with continual interplay between the two (V. Biti). This history of the treatment of works of literature in Umjetnost riječi is essentially connected with the way language is understood. In the first case language is seen as a "deviation" from some generally accepted norm, in the second language is no more than the "medium" and in the third it is understood as a "world". A critical analysis is given of all three approaches and also of the functionalism of R. Jacobson and J. Mukarovsky. The author also gives some of his own solutions to the problems treated.
