L’IDENTITÉ LINGUISTIQUE EN FRANCE AU XVIE SIÈCLE FACE À L’INFLUENCE ITALIENNE

Summary/Abstract: Anti-Italianism in sixteenth-century France concerns the French linguistic identity, which is forming at that time. As a highly elaborated language, Italian is considered by French speakers as a model to both imitate and reject. Consequently, the numerous Italian forms, which flow into French through the translation of Italian texts, are the target of a purist campaign aiming at getting the French language free from the Italian model. This challenge also rests upon supposed “philological” systems, such as the one conceived by Henri Estienne, which are meant to render the protestation more coherent.
