Summary/Abstract: News stories are reports about recent events or happenings that must efficiently convey accurate, clear and unambigous information to a mass audience, in a short amount of time or space. This study aims to analyse from a discoursive standpoint, the way in which information is conveyed in the news first paragraph, usually named lead in terms of information packaging and referent identifiability, simoultaneously taking into account several factors, such as the type of media, the type of grounding provided for the subject noun phrases found in the lead sentences and the way the subject noun phrases are linguistically marked as topics or non topics.
