Summary/Abstract: While re-situating the documentary on cinema in the category of films on art, the present article compares three creative documentaries on the subject: Nick's Movie by Wim Wenders and Nicholas Ray (1980), Mein liebster friend – Klaus Kinski by Wener Herzog (1999) and Cinéastes à tout prix by Frédéric Sojcher. The technical analysis of the visual language used for interviews, the choice of protagonists and the way of guiding the public's emotions reveal the cinema manifesto of each director.
