Summary/Abstract: The article analyses two categories of compound words and syntagmatic units (nouns and pronouns) from the Istro-Romanian vocabulary, which have in their structure terms of Latin origin. The purpose of this study is to check the potential of Latin words from the Istro-Romanian language to create new lexical units through word joining (compounding). The number of such terms identified in the two categories is extremely low. Some have in their structure only words inherited from Latin, but there are cases in which, in the structure of a compound, an inherited word is combined with a borrowing from Croatian. Some compounds and syntagmatic units were formed in an authentic manner, others are based on periphrastic structures, considered by some speakers as a unit, while others appeared under the influence of a foreign pattern (Croatian or Italian), through word transfer. Lexical elements inherited from Latin have a reduced potential to form new words through compounding. Among the existing compounds in Istro-Romanian, some come from the period before the separation of the Romanian dialects.
