Summary/Abstract: The article is devoted to the analysis of the semantics of the word professional, as reflected in dictionaries and implemented in the discourse. The word has several semantic features the same as a number of similar words with the meaning of high professional or social status. It is defined firstly that emotionally appraisal microcomponent of the word professional has an ambivalent character (the usage of the lexeme can mark respect, appreciation or contempt), and secondly that the pragmatic area of the meaning includes the national-cultural component, due to the peculiarities of Russian speech etiquette (speaking about myself too well is indecent). Negatively perceived effect of self-praise is neutralized in the texts intended to be read by a lim-ited circle of persons (e.g. in a diary), as well as by using certain grammatical structures. Such conditions reduce the weight of self-presentational component, increasing the proportion of self-identification of the speaker (search and confirmation of personal identity). Explanatory dictionary of the active type can reflect this information including into the structure of the article such notes as "about oneself", "about others", "for oneself", "for others", various examples of specific genre and type of linguistic identity can be introduced in the area of illustrative material.
