Summary/Abstract: Th e article outlines a concept of career development applicable in career counselling. Drawing on Kazimierz Twardowski’s theory of actions and products, the author proposes a model of development, distinguishing thereby development as an action and development as a product. Development as a product is a particular kind of behaviour which proves valuable on the labour market. The behaviour is accounted for in the framework of the subject’s actions and the source of the actions, i. e. a change in the state of the subject. To describe the change, the author puts forward a relational model of personal subjectivity. Relying on it, the author points out basic varieties of developmental change and discusses the principal function of development, i.e. preparing a person to cope with occupational problems abundant on the volatile labour market.
