Economic, social and environmental effects of transport congestion

Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the negative effects of transport congestion in cities. The aim of the research is to identify direct and indirect effects of congestion on the urban road network, their scope and subjects that are exposed to those effects. The article presents the results of a qualitative analysis of the effects of congestion. Congestion is one of the external costs of transport. It occurs not only in large urban areas, but increasingly in medium-sized cities. Knowledge of congestion costs is required to assess the cost-effectiveness of transport investment projects. The article presents the results of estimation of the costs of congestion in the major Polish cities.
