Summary/Abstract: In the first part of the article the importance of entrepreneurship has been discussed, whose institutional dimension is the creation and development of small and medium-sized enterprises. The article also identifies the features which affect the competitiveness of the economy and stimulate its growth provided that they are recognised by companies. The next section describes the actions of local government which support the development of entrepreneurship. It was noted that the policies of regional and local authorities are responsible for creating the opportunities for the development of entrepreneurship in the regions of the country particularly in relation to small and medium-sized enterprises. The last part of the article describes the actions taken by the local authorities of the city of Suwalki, which are focused on the economic development of the city and support the development of entrepreneurship. There are some initiatives, whose aim is to encourage the creation of new businesses and the development of existing ones. These initiatives are described in three groups: investment incentives, tax relives for businesses, and investments in technical infrastructure.
