Summary/Abstract: Small towns in Poland are varied in the context of economic potential and spatial development. Most of them are located away from big cities. Polish small towns most frequently are central places for the surrounding rural areas. They are characterized by significant share of open space with the supremacy of agricultural function. The authors' main objective is the analysis of directions of spatial and functional transformation in small towns in the light of socio-economic changes, and, subsequently. The final step of the analysis is a typology of small towns, in which the character of spatial and functional transition is taken under consideration
