Summary/Abstract: The paper presents experimental studies that tested the influence of activated independent and interdependent self and of the imposed role (self-presenter vs. interlocutor) on effectiveness of ingratiation and self-promotion among 666 men and women differing in psychological gender. The results showed that independent self facilitated effectiveness of self-promotion only in group of women but interdependent self had no impact on any role, neither in women, nor in men. Psychological gender did not differentiate the effectiveness of roleplaying but it was associated with attractiveness of self-presentation using peripheral features, not associated with the role. In both roles the subjects were rated higher on features connected with the role than features not associated with the role. The results indicate that ability to play a role is independent of people’s identity.
