The Syllogistics of Lewis Carroll

Summary/Abstract: The article presents Lewis Carroll's diagram method for solving syllogisms. This method dates from the time of transition from Tradition to Modernity in Logic. It differs from the methods of Euler and Venn, while at the same time it resembles them. Carroll's method is entirely in the field of Syllogistics – bridging the gap between Tradition and Modernity under the name Symbolic Logic. Work with negative terms in Syllogistics broadens its area of validity; and the matrix representation of categorical propositions facilitates calculability of the conclusion from the premises given.
