The controversy over the euro adoption strategies in the new EU member states

Summary/Abstract: The EMU candidate countries have to take into account that the inclusion of the new members in the euro area could be seriously postponed. In the extreme cases they should consider the possibility of the unilateral euroization. On the one hand, the impact of the global financial crises had caused the deterioration of the main macroeconomic indicators, which has undermined the ability of the euro candidate to meet the Maastricht convergence criteria. On the other hand, the leading eurozone member states create the effective obstacles to make the euro adoption process difficult. Simultaneously the global financial crisis has changed both expected benefits and costs of the EMU membership.
