Summary/Abstract: One of the key problems faced by health care administrators in Poland is the determination of the number of hospitals. The official tally provided in the official Statistical Bulleting of the Ministry of Health differs significantly from the numbers obtained from state registers and through scientific research. The disparity results mainly from the lack of precise and unambiguous definitions and classification principles. The legislative changes introduced at the turn of 2011 and 2012 brought additional complications, for example by establishing a new concept of ”a health care entity company”, interpreted as a territorial unit for statistical purposes (in accordance with the Polish Act on Public Statistics), and by adopting a new classification of three categories of health care entities, in place of the formerly adopted international classification of health care providers.
