Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses the evolution of visual arts education along with the development of the concept and methods of art therapy for socially maladjusted persons. We present the overview of psychological mechanisms regulating and modifying social maladjustment as well as the ways to influence such mechanisms through art therapy actions. A major focus is on the art therapy concepts developed by Tadeusz Marciniak. We attempt to verify the Visual Arts Education Model which was promoted at the beginning of the 1990s. For this purpose, we have prepared a dedicated test: an inventory to measure special aptitudes in visual arts. The test, developed in cooperation with art theoreticians and practitioners, comprised a series of problems to solve, each belonging to one of the four areas of Tadeusz Mariciniak’s Model. The measurements of aptitudes among primary schools and general secondary schools students and their visual arts teachers allow us to assume that skills and knowledge acquired at these education levels will develop proportionally to the age and further education of subjects. The two types of actions, i.e. skills and knowledge acquisition, contribute to personality integration and enrich its development.
