Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this article is to gain a deeper understanding of music’s indeterminacy of meaning, the experience of listening to music, and perception of emotional expression encoded within musical parameters. The key contribution of this paper is to articulate and give expression to the cognitive psychology of music, the ordinary listener’s scale-degree representation, and the role of music within human cultures. There has been a flurry of pronouncements over recent years about defining characteristics of musical meaning, the internal motions of the musical form, and commonalities at the level of musical structures. The findings presented here show a strong correlation between the social functions of music, the form of interactive musical behaviors, and music functions as a framework for social and intentional action.
