Oral history as rescue history: experience, narrative, existence

Summary/Abstract: Filipkowski’s point of departure is a basic and naive understanding of rescue (oral) history that is based on emphasizing its potential to create sources and thus to contribute to filling histori(ographi)cal gaps. After two short but intensive excursions into experience and narrative in oral history, Filipkowski arrives at the existential foundations of this research practice. The key questions of existential oral history thus understood no longer revolve around epistemological issues of representation, validity and reliability, but begin to concern ontological and ethical problems of subjectivity, contingency and self-reflexivity.
