Summary/Abstract: The paper is focused on the manifestation of a religious phenomenon, expressed as the homage paid to Christian saints as heavenly defenders of residential localities. This phenomenon dates back to the pre-socialist years. During socialism it no longer existed, but in the period of democratic changes – it has been again revived. A few problems are emphasized: in some cases the homage paid to the old city patrons is restored – as in the examples of the towns of Troyan and Pazardzhik; in other cases the old heavenly patron is replaced by a new one – as the example of Sozopol indicate, but in most cases today people choose a new patron saint for their town in view of the local specifics – for wine producing regions – it is St. Trifon; for fisheries – St. Nikola. Frequently people choose for a patron the saint who was born and resided in the town.
