Summary/Abstract: People with mental illness are often subject to negative stigma. “Internalized” stigma or “self-stigma” occurs when a person absorbs stigmatizing stereotypes about mental illness and apply them to him- or herself. Internalized stigma has been associated with a number of negative outcomes, including decreased self-esteem, social avoidance, worsening psychiatric symptoms and decreased illness management. These people can benefit from structured therapeutic strategies to learn how to overcome the irrational attitudes which harm their identity. The purpose of this article is to offer a comprehensive review of the actual published literature concerned the strategies to reduce self-stigma among people with mental illness and to present the benefits. Interventions ranged from psychoeducation alone to psychoeducation combined with cognitive-behavior therapy and more complex or multimodal interventions.
