Summary/Abstract: This article reflects on the geopolitical, geopoetical and identity-forming potential of two literary representations of the Galician city of Sambir and its surroundings. Artur Sandauer and Andrzej Kuśniewicz, the two writers whose works form the focus of this study, were both born in or near Sambir, but they belong to different ethnicities and social classes. Their representations of the prewar realities of Samir tell a story of parallel worlds that were, despite their physical proximity, divided by clearly demarcated boundaries – including topographical ones. Topographical realities fulfil a role that is not neutral from a semantic point of view. They are a matter of interpretation, signalling the describing subject’s position in relation to the material described. Both writers’ works contain not only a consciously remembered Galician small town of the past, but they also exhibit the effect of habitual memory – a memory which, building on ideas about what is ‘normal,’ is rarely problematized but presents an overlooked story.
