Effective response to disturbances - flexible supply chain

Summary/Abstract: Increasing uncertainty of the supply chains’ environment and supplier-buyer relationships mean for enterprises the necessity of concentrating not only on the prevention against the disruptions, but also on strategies of responding to unforeseen changes in the area of supply and demand. The main aim of the paper is to desrcibe the issue of the flexible supply chains. The ability of building flexible supply chains is today a key element of coping with crisis situations. The article desribes the issue of the flexible supply chains and activities in the field of ensuring the continuity of flow processes in relationship with suppliers of the strategic, bottlenecks, leverage and non-critical items. It also presents the results of a late 2013 survey in Poland. The hypothesis is that enterprises supply chain flexibility mainly through the use of buffer stocks. The results show that among the activities carried out by the companies to ensure the flexibility in responding to supply chain disruptions in the first place are: having emergency suppliers, increasing safety stocks, and sharing information with partners actively.
