Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this article is to present the role of the initial evaluation of suppliers by the company in building partnerships with them. This assessment is seen by many enterprises (who are clients) as one of key steps in the purchase process. The initial evaluation of suppliers allows to significantly limit the level of risk especially in the case of new providers. The results of empirical study indicate that companies operating in Poland, in order to shape the partner relationships with suppliers carrying out an initial assessment of new providers, are focusing mainly on technical quality products, favorable price, the stated delivery time, payment terms, after sales service, scope of warranty commitments, technology capacity of suppliers, wide range of offered products, the financial condition of suppliers, as well as product innovation.
