Summary/Abstract: The article focuses on Olomouc bishop Robert (1202–1240) and attempts to discover the reasons behind his resignation. Pope Gregory IX issued a papal bull in 1237 in which he condemned Robert for his public rejection of reverence for the stigmata of St. Francis of Assisi, as he did not deem them genuine. Thus, within the context of the relevant events at that time, Robert criticized important aspects of papal policy. In order to determine the broader motives for Robert’s denial of the stigmata of St. Francis of Assisi, the text analyses written evidence of Francis having received the stigmata, the documents of the church authority’s opinions on the stigmata up until the end of the 13th century, and also the general reasons for denying the stigmata.
