Summary/Abstract: The article discussed the issues determining functional urban areas in the context of investment in economic development, employment growth and strengthening European territorial cooperation. With a similar external support (from the budget of the European Union, cohesion policy effects), economically stronger and larger regions had a larger share of the benefits resulting from the process of agglomeration and economies of scale than weaker ones. The intention of the authors was to: identify areas with strong and poor functional relationships with regional centres, define differences between administrative and functional areas, as well as indicate the peripheral zones at regional level as potential goals of cohesion policy in Poland.
