Summary/Abstract: The aim of the paper is to investigate word stress in contemporary Central Cassubian dialects. The material comprises over 5000 words spoken by 17 informants. Older descriptions attest a free and columnar stress in the dialects concerned with a tendency to an initial stress. Some newer descriptions postulate an overcome of the initial stress in all central Cassubian dialects. The paper attests the free and columnar stress in the north-west part of the territory. The free columnar stress is more or less preserved in some word-building categories in the south-east too, although the tendency to the initial stress is very strong there. Dependence of the stress on the verbal aspect and pre-fixation is also a very interesting innovation, so far not described.
