Summary/Abstract: Contemporary music displays a growing tendency of incorporating the digital technique, first of all into the performing practice and, in an increasingly obvious manner, into the process of musical creation. The innovating phenomena that music has been experiencing over the past centuries, particularly the transition from the choral music of the Renaissance to the instrumental music of the Baroque, strengthens the idea that we are going through a stage in which such a mutation from the traditional voices and instruments to the electronic technique is taking place. In this context efforts are necessary in order to understand and guide the phenomenon, as well as to attenuate the sociological impact to the possible extent and to avoid shocks. A treatise on “digitology” may be an answer to the multiple problems posed by the future of the new music.
