Summary/Abstract: Insurance derivatives are instruments that allow insurable risk to be transferred to financial markets. The purpose of the paper is to provide justification for the thesis that insurance derivatives may in the future become an important risk-management tool in enterprises, despite significant currently observable obstacles. The insurance derivatives market is dominated by (re)insurers. However, the convergence of financial and insurance markets may lead to the emergence of new solutions or lead existing solutions into new areas of application. In this context, the paper discusses the role of insurance derivatives and provides a description of their basic types. The paper is based on the conceptual analysis of literature and the method of document analysis in the body of the reports provided by leading international institutions offering insurance derivatives.
