Summary/Abstract: Under the "Europe 2020" European Union strategy, the achievement of a high level of social and economic development depends among others on innovation and creativity, which can only be ensured by very well educated people. Investments in education constitute an essential key to success for states with limited capital reserves of citizens, such as Poland. At present, knowledge and information quickly become outdated; that is why the present-day employee, independently of the position occupied and the professional specialty, whether they are an owner of a company or they are hired by a company, must be open to those challenges and changes which enterprises or organizations in the market economy must face. For this reason, lifelong education is of a huge significance. Hence, the purpose of this article is to discuss the significance of lifelong education, its impact on economic development and an increase of social awareness. The objectives and forms of education and the latest research results are presented.
