Summary/Abstract: The article shows the history of the Department of Political and Legal Ideas of Law and Administration Faculty of University of Warsaw and contains short biographies of the Heads of the Department. It also includes the detailed report of recent activities of the Department (from 2001 to 2012). The Department was established on 14th November 1962 in order to gather a group of scientists who would conduct researches on the field of the history of idea. Its mission is studying philosophical foundations of the state and legal system. There had been three Heads of the Department in the years: 1963–1968: professor Mieczysław Maneli; 1968–1986: Wiktor Suchecki, LL LL D Habilitus; and from 1989: professor Hubert Izdebski. Conferences and seminars organised, and researches taken at the Department are constantly a part of both Polish and international scientific achievements and the scientific literature. Over the years the scientists of the Department have led the subjects connected to the history of the legal and political thought or the theoretic aspects of the state and the legal reality. The history of the Department, over many political systems changing in time, shows that the reflection on the history of the idea is timeless. It is hoped that nowadays, by the time of discussions on the program of law study, the achievements of the Department will be an important argument for keeping relatively high participation of academic subjects in the program of study.
