Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the wide range of problems associated with the definition of the role of the Arctic zone of the Russian Federa-tion in the sphere of strategic national interests. The Russian part of the Arctic is an abstract term. At present, there is no legal regula-tion defining the Russian borders of the southern part of the Arctic. The Arctic macroregion plays an important role in sustainable development of the country ensuring Russian national interests, its economic development, defensive capacity, and environmental security. However, the federal law on the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation has not been adopted yet. It is still in the process of legal drafting. The need to establish the Arctic zone as an independent subject of the state regional politics is supported.
