Weeding of Publicatins in Slovenian Libraries as a Was of Supplementing the Material of National and Universtiy Library in Ljubljana

Summary/Abstract: In Slovenia, subject to the Librarianship Act all types of libraries have to weed the library material in accordance with the professional instructions of the national library. Thus, the libraries must first send the lists of deselected material to the National and University Library in Ljubljana (i.e. NUK) to examine them and select the publications for the national collection. The main significance of the weeded material is to supplement the collection of »slovenika« with the publications not received as legal deposit or those published abroad, or to replace the damaged, missing and photocopied publications. The withdrawal of library material in the Slovene libraries is the last possibility for NUK to replace the out of print titles. The analysis of the material received in 2005 and 2006 shows the advantages and disadvantages of collecting the written cultural heritage in this way. In 2005, almost 10% of the NUK material intake is from the weeded material, whereas the data for 2006 has not been processed yet.
