The specifics of feminine suffixal derivatives in contemporary Ukrainian mass media texts: gender constants and transformations

Summary/Abstract: The article analyses the verbalisation of social female gender stereotypes in the contemporary Ukrainian language. Based on material from Ukrainian mass media discourse and lexicographical sources, the author argues that the scope of extension of female professional and social nominations is achieved mainly by the formation of feminine suffixed-derivatives from the corresponding masculine formations. The article contain s elements of comparison with the Russian language, where the use of masculine formations for professional status and nominations of persons, both male and female, is the norm.
