Summary/Abstract: The rise in the openness level of economies is the essential result of integration process and influences the member countries' economic growth, especially the growth of the new- entered countries, with high pace of trade liberalization. Consequently, it can be the important determinant of the real convergence process. The paper presents a review of theoretical and empirical researches concerning the relationship between trade openness and economic growth. In the empirical part of the paper the real convergence process in the European Union in period 1993-2011 is investigated and discussed. Then, panel growth regression model is performed in order to show the influence of trade liberalization on the pace of economic growth and real convergence process in the European Union. The paper concludes with suggestions for further researches.
