Summary/Abstract: In recent decades there have been major changes in the world economy. Insufficient adaptability of the Serbian economy to these changes and inadequate use of resources, have caused a deep economic crisis in Serbia. The crisis is serious, not just from the point of decline in domestic product, but also because of the repeated stopping of economic reforms and high debt growth. To exit from the crisis, Serbia must develop the concept of sustainable development, which implies meeting the needs of present generations in a manner that will enable future generations to meet their needs. The current situation requires urgent and concrete measures such as: attracting foreign direct investment, tax incentives and stimulation of exports through economic growth. In addition, it is necessary to complete the process of privatization and divert focus on the small and medium-sized companies that should become the engine of development of our country. However, complete recovery of the Serbian economy in the long run, will not be possible without a fundamental restructuring and integration into the new economic trends. Therefore, Serbia should invest in the development of infrastructure and human resources, which are key factors for long-term growth and reduction of unemployment, as well as to harmonize its standards with European and international, in all areas. Regarding our further development, we must be aware of the fact that the arrival of foreign investment cannot solve all problems and that in addition to their attraction we have to invest in our own potential. When it comes to technological development, foreign countries must remain our main source of supply, but we should also develop the ability to adopt in order to use the imported technology in the right way.
