Summary/Abstract: The phenomenon of feminism, generally associated with the Western world, has its equivalent in the Muslim culture. The beginnings of the feminist ideology in the world of Islam – An- Nisayat date back to the end of the 19th century. Three main streams could be distinguished within the above movement. The first one, called “invisible feminism”, occurred in the period between 1860 and 1920. The second period of the movement took place till the 1970s. It is characterised by the secular and liberal approach to the women's rights and often tends to be referred to as a copy of the model of the Western society. The third period of the movement –Islamic feminism, as opposed to the earlier incarnation of the phenomenon, looks for its ideological bases in Islam. The article presents the three streams of the Muslim feminism as outlined above. The last part of the article discusses several international organisations which form the global, transnational movement of Islamic feminism.
