Summary/Abstract: Gender is a grammatical category in most European languages, to be more precise, in the Indo-European languages. Gender of animate nouns is assumed to coincide with sex, but there are many exceptions, as we will see. In this article I deal with a number of different languages in order to demonstrate the cross-linguistic significance of this category.
