The Silence of the Christian Martyrs

Summary/Abstract: Examining a few Acts of the Balkan Christian martyrs of the 4th century CE, the present investigation focuses on the confines of the Christian silence in hostile societies. As it appears in the hagiographical documents investigated, the silence played a prominent part in the Christian martyrs’ behavior. Actually, until the time of their arrest, silence emerges as a background in attaining their main goal, i.e., a deeper connection with God in prayer. Yet, in some respects, their silence continues even after the time of their arrest. As a rule, the confine of a martyr’s silence is abjuring the faith either directly or indirectly.
