Summary/Abstract: This article analyses Baumol's "cost disease" of performing organizations, which operate under financial strain. The case study of Metropolitan Opera in New York shows how new technologies, new ways of communication and globalization can positively affect the financial situation of an opera house and contribute to the popularization of this art form. The Metropolitan Opera not only managed to increase its earned revenues, but moreover the use of new distribution channels enriched the catalogue of intellectual content, revolutionized the ways of perception of classical music and significantly contributed to the global audience development
