Summary/Abstract: Analyzing contemporary theory and methodology of textual linguistics, the author considers the present state of the discipline - its cognitive attraction and explanation possibilities. She focuses on the outcome of the Polish research, as its development ran differently than in West-European area. She explores the way of conceptualization of the discipline subject - the text category. She analyzes the following text profiles: structuralist, pragmatic and cognitivist, searching for some continuity between them. Apparently, it is pragmatic concept of cohesion - communicative assumption and the point of destination, not belonging to text category. In the final part, she attempts to answer the question if the text concept will meet the demands of contemporary culture and civilization. She finds it necessary to modify some text determinants, especially at structural level (highlighting the role of message, stressing the multi-code and multi-level text character) and at pragmatic one (growing complexity of sender-recipient roles).
